What Makes a Stock Halal?
A stock is considered Shariah-compliant (halal) when it passes two key screening criteria established by the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI):
Qualitative Screen
The company's primary business must not involve prohibited activities such as alcohol, gambling, pork, tobacco, or conventional banking.
Quantitative Screen
Three financial ratios must be below thresholds: Debt/Market Cap <30%, Deposits/Market Cap <30%, Prohibited Income/Revenue <5%.
